Kannada Wedding

Kannada weddings are simple and very ritualistic. There are many pre and post wedding rituals that take place. In fact, from region to region, the rituals changes slightly. However, all the rituals show a profound belief of Kannad people in God and their traditions.

Nischay Tamulam

The Kannada wedding starts with the ritual known as a Nischay Tamulam. That declares the alliance of two families and fixing of wedding and engagement dates. Now onwards the bride and groom are engaged formally.

The parents of bride gift dhoti, fruits and coconut to groom. The parents of a groom give sari, coconut and fruits to the bride.

Naandi

Naandi is a ritual that is performed by groom as well as a bride in their respective house. It involves worshiping and seeking blessing of God for smooth and successful wedding, which is going to take place.

Kashi Yatra

During this ritual groom pretend to go for Kashi yatra as he is unable to choose or married to a right girl. Then groom’s maternal uncle shows him a bride that he has chosen for him. After looking at bride groom drop his planning of Kashi yatra and agree to merry bride.

Wedding ritual

The Mandapam and wedding venue is purified by chanting mantras and other poojas.

The groom wears silk dhoti and pitambar whereas a bride wears nine yards sari and beautiful jewelry. The bride father washes the groom’s toes and gives him designated place to sit in wedding mandapam that is known as var pooja. The bride sits next to groom, and they exchanges garlands. The bride’s father gives away his daughter to groom by keeping coconut, beetle on couple’s hands and pouring holy water this is known as Dhare Herdu. The groom ties mangalsutras around bride’s neck and takes seven steps around sacred fire in presence of holy chants.

Post wedding ritual

After completion of wedding, the bride is escorted to her new home where she welcomed warmly. The bride knocks down the pot filled with rice with her right feet that is known as grihpravesh. Later, the name change ceremony takes place in which groom inscribed with the ring the new name he has chosen for the bride on the plate of rice.

Later parents of a bride came to take newly wedded couple to their house. The new couples stay at a bride’s place for few days. Then groom’s parents’ come to bring back couple to their house.

Reception

The reception is arranged in a banquet hall for a couple so everyone can meet a new couple. The grand feast is arranged for guests on the occasion.
